One of the Research Assistants of the Researcher Fostering Laboratory of CCPN,  Willa Ying Zhen, PhD candidate of Social Anthropology, SOAS, had completed her one year fieldwork in China on Knowledge Transmission in Cantonese Cooking Schools. She proposed the theme 'Chinese food in Comparative Perspective' for celebrating Chinese New Year with other CCPN RAs, CCPN and LSE colleagues and their families, partners and friends. Although it was a very challenge task, the successful event coined a saying 'enjoy international food' which fits in well with a Chinese traditional saying, 'Read 10 thousands books, travel 10 thousand miles'; and a popular addition 'make friends within the four seas' in 1980s, and finally, 'enjoy international food' (破万卷书,行万里路,交四方友,食国际餐).  This event was held on the Chinese New Year day 14 Feb 2010, Sunday (庚寅年正月一日) from 12:30 to 4:30pm at Mill Hill, London.

One week later, another Chinese New Year's party was held at 167 Victoria Park Road, London, by staff and Chinese students of International Employment Relations and Human Resource Management ( IER & HRM), Department of Management.  This event last for eight hours when the post-80s preformed their cooking skills. They made different styles and varieties of delicious Chinese food including Chinese dumplings. The party ended with a lovely English style cake and pudding made by a PhD candidate who came from beautiful Shropshire in  western England. This set another example of Chinese food in combination with English dessert in a party!

Thank you very much for your kind invitation and hospitality! I was actually very impressed by organisation: arranging guests' arrival and departure, taking photos, making food, even providing the menu! Re food, I found everything very delicious! Of those that I tried, I very much liked lamb korma, chicken with three cups of sauce, pork belly and dumplings. There were also sliced pieces of beef - I am not sure how they are called on the menu but they were really nice. The Thai salad with mango was great - it was a nice mix of sweet & sour flavour. I also think that the French salad and Mediterranean tomato with mozzarella truly reflected the corresponding style. I also loved fried noodles in Cantonese style. Re drinks, I enjoyed soya milk, which I found very soft and delicate. And the rice balls were amazing too!  Today I talked to my parents and shared my impressions about the party saying that it was the best Lunar New Year celebration I had in the UK with a great variety of dishes and interesting people! -- Esuna Dugarova
