Chinese entrepreneur relationships and global economics

This project was a part of the Fellowships for Excellence scheme, administered by the DIUS on behalf of the governments of the United Kingdom and the People's Republic of China to encourage greater research collaboration between Chinese and UK institutions. The scheme enables UK postdoctoral researchers from all disciplines to undertake research projects in China for up to 12 months and forms a central part of the newly launched Sino-UK Partners in Education programme.

After the global financial crisis Chinese economic growth is slowing down. Instead of relying on cheap labour the Chinese economy has to build its economy upon another basis. This is vital for the Chinese economy, as well as for the global economy. The process of how Chinese entrepreneurs build up their businesses, especially how they use their personal networks to build businesses has been observed. Dr. Xiangqun Chang conducted a nine month fieldwork in collaboration with Nanjing University. It was based on her previous research by applying the methods and theory of “social support networks” and the “Chinese model of relationship and reciprocity (lishang-wanglai)” in both rural and urban settings and different regions.

“Chinese entrepreneur relationships” is the first application of the above “Chinese model of relationship and reciprocity (lishang-wanglai)”. Chinese entrepreneurs form what could be called an ethical group in the UK. UK entrepreneurs are also an ethical group in China. A programme has been developed to help them in handling different kinds of business relationships.

The outcomes of the research work have been presented below:

  • 2010 “China model” (lishang-wanglai): -- A socio-cultural perspective, China Policy Institute (CPI), School of Contemporary Chinese Studies, International House, University of Nottingham, 16th Nov.
  • 2010 The China Model: current economic development on mainland China, together with Professor Athar Hussein and Dr Kent Deng, Confucius Institute for Business London, public debate, LSE, 2nd Nov.
