The project 'Comparative Studies on the New Migrants from BRIC countries in America, Australia, Japan and the UK' (hereafter called 'The BRIC migrant project'), is funded by the Grant-in-aid scientific research, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. This project lasts for four years from 2009 to 2012. The Principle Investigator of the project is Professor Lixing Chen, Department of Sociology, Kwansei Gakuin University, Japan. Dr Xiangqun Chang, Coordinator of China in Comparative Perspective Network (CCPN), London School of Economics and Political Science, is one of the co-Principle Investigators, who is responsible to coordinate with the Research Partners.

Preparatory meeting

On 17-18 August 2009 a preparatory meeting on the BRIC migrant project was held in Shenyang, China. The PI of the project, Professor Lixing Chen was doing a survey in China, whereas Dr Xiangqun Chang, was conducting fieldwork in Shenyang, where she met Professor Lixing Chen and Professor Wei Wang, Faculty of Economics, Kagawa University, Japan.

During the meeting a number of issues on running the project were discussed. It has been agreed that:

  • We encourage young researchers to participate in the project by broadcasting the news about the project widely;
  • We anticipate using both English and Japanese languages to deliver the research outcomes;
  • Two conferences will be held, one in Tokyo in Autumn 2010 and the other in London in Spring 2012;
  • Professor Wei Wang will participate in the project on Chinese migrants in both Japan and the UK, where she will be a Visiting Professor at the Centre for Migration and Diaspora Studies, SOAS, on her Sabbatical Leave from April 2010 to March 2011.
  • Dr Chang will responsible for coordinating with researchers in the UK, USA and Australia, hosting the international conference in London in 2012, and co-editing the conference proceedings.
